Today is Earth Day! Since 1970, April 22 has been commemorated with Earth Day activities that call for greater protection for our planet. The prevention of disasters of climate change and environmental destruction requires bold, creative, and innovative solutions from all sectors. And it’s not just big organizations, businesses, or governments who need to take action. We’re all in this together. Individual efforts when united with millions of others can have a great impact. Anyone can make a difference in protecting our precious land, air, water, and wildlife.

This year’s theme is “Restore Our Earth”. How can you contribute to this? You can start by being conscious of your daily practices and how they affect the planet. Here’s what you can do for Earth Day, map out your routine and calculate your carbon footprint. When you are aware, then you can make wiser decisions and make changes to reduce your total greenhouse gas emissions. There are billions of acts of green happening across the planet but they’re still not enough. You can always add little ways to conserve energy, among others.

The environment is a key concern for Smeg and strategies are continuously being developed and improved so that the business will always be earth-friendly.

In 2007, the Smeg headquarters in Guastalla, Emilia Romagna was recognized for its intelligent consumption management and sustainable development policies. During the Modena Domotics Competition, the site was named as one of the most innovative in Italy.

Responsible Design

Smeg ovens, cooktops, coffee machines, ranges, dishwashers, washing machines, hoods, refrigerators, and freezers are all designed with environmental considerations in mind. Much emphasis is placed on the choice of materials, prioritizing those that can be easily recycled such as stainless steel, glass, aluminum, and brass so you don’t end up sending too many things to the landfill. Smeg is very conscious of unnecessary waste. The Smeg drip filter coffee machine has a permanent stainless steel filter so a paper filter is one less item in your trash can.

Energy Efficient

High performance and low consumption are features of all Smeg ovens, cooktops, dishwashers, hoods, built-in refrigerators, and coffee machines.

In compliance with European Union directives, the energy efficiency of appliances is labeled based on seven classes from A to G, with A the most energy-efficient and G the least. Grade A is divided further into three categories: A+, A++, and A+++. The best models have an A+++ rating. These are the ones that use the least energy and help you save on the electric bill. Using less energy means reduced burning of fossil fuels and less need to mine materials for energy production and manufacture. Furthermore, this also brings down greenhouse gas emissions.

The Smeg free-standing dishwasher has an energy efficiency rating of A+. Likewise, the Portofino free-standing cooker has an A+ energy rating as well. Its Ecologic program, which restricts oven power to merely 2.3kW makes it the most energy-efficient large cooker available, anywhere.

While vintage in design, the FAB 32 refrigerator is equipped with modern technology, it runs on an inverter compressor so it produces very little noise, is durable, and energy-saving. In fact, it has an impressive A +++ energy rating.

Smeg’s 60cm built-in ovens under the Classic and Linea aesthetic lines boast of an energy rating of AA+. And if you use Smeg induction hobs and induction free-standing cookers, energy efficiency is maximized and heat loss is minimized because of its induction technology based on magnetic fields. This involves inducing heat onto a ferrous material at the base of the pan in effect making the pot the element that cooks the food.

Literally Green

If you want to step away from the usual neutral white, gray, and stainless steel themes and want a more vibrant look for your kitchen, green is a good option. Because of its heavy association with nature, green is often described as a refreshing and tranquil color. Indeed, a lush forest, a patch of grass, or a line of trees have calming and soothing effects. Green is thought to be a stress-reliever.

Instead of concentrating on the colors of your walls, countertops, backsplashes, and cabinets, how about making your home appliances as the focal point of your kitchen? Having color in the most unexpected spots, like a toaster, a cooker, or a refrigerator can be an interesting approach.how about making your home appliances as the focal point of your kitchen?

Smeg carries several items in green. To help you begin your day, you can have a toaster, kettle, and citrus juicer in pastel green. For your coffee corner, there’s Smeg’s pastel green drip filter coffee machine, espresso coffee machine, and milk frother. If you need equipment for food preparation, the Smeg stand mixer and blender are also available in pastel green. If you’re eyeing the iconic 50s style Fab refrigerators, the good news is that all three sizes - the mini Fab 5, the practical Fab 28, two-door Fab 32 - can be purchased in pastel green.

If you are leaning towards a darker shade, you will find it difficult to resist the olive green Portofino free-standing cooker with a matching Portofino wall-mounted hood that is capable of eliminating the most persistent odors and give you a purified environment.

With this line-up, you can choose to go all out with the verdant motif or just have pops of green here and there.
